If you were hoping for a fresh twist on the time-loop genre, "Bhool Chuk Maaf" will probably leave you disappointed. Directed by Karan Sharma and starring Rajkummar Rao, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Sanjay Mishra, this new Hindi rom-com tries to spin an engaging tale but ends up tangled in its own preachiness and lack of character depth.
The film starts off with promise: Ranjan Tiwari (Rajkummar Rao), a small-town romantic, wants nothing more than a stable government job so he can marry his bubbly girlfriend, Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi). Once he finally lands the job and gets ready for the wedding, he finds himself stuck in a time loop, reliving the day before his big moment over and over again.
Sounds fun, right? Unfortunately, the execution is a slog. The script is stuffed with forced puns, awkward wordplay, and a painfully slow build-up. When the time loop finally kicks in, the movie takes a sudden, jarring turn into philosophical territory, tackling ethics and the flaws in government and social systems. Instead of exploring these themes with any subtlety, the film goes into full lecture mode, turning a potentially entertaining romance into a preachy, moralistic tale.
None of the characters are particularly likable or well-developed. Ranjan is more caricature than character, and Titli’s entire personality seems to revolve around wanting a wedding. Even the talented cast can't break through the thin writing or make these roles memorable. The oversaturated visuals and endless romantic songs only drag out the runtime, making the whole experience feel like a hotchpotch of ideas with little payoff.
"Bhool Chuk Maaf" ultimately offers little to redeem itself. It might be tolerable as an OTT release, but spending money to watch this on the big screen feels like a mistake. If you’re looking for a smart, funny, or even moving time-loop romance, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
