As the south-western monsoon approaches, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Konkan-Goa coast and an orange alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy downpours and potential disruptions.
Red Alert for Konkan-Goa Coast
The IMD has placed the Konkan-Goa coast under a red alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region. The alert also warns of gusting winds reaching speeds of up to 65 km/h, which could cause damage to infrastructure such as communication and power lines. Additionally, the IMD has cautioned about potential damage to agricultural spaces and cattle in open areas.
Orange Alert for Mumbai and Other Regions
An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai and other regions, including the Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra belt, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Coastal Karnataka. These areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with gusty winds of up to 50 km/h.
Heat-Wave Conditions in Rajasthan and Gujarat
While parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat are expected to face heat-wave-like conditions, other regions such as East Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, Odisha, Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, and Vidarbha are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
Low-Pressure Systems in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal
The IMD has noted the presence of low-pressure systems in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, which could potentially lead to cyclonic developments. These systems are expected to persist until May 27 and may worsen after the next 72 hours. However, the IMD has clarified that there is no immediate possibility of Cyclone Shakti forming.
Conclusion
The IMD's alerts and warnings underscore the need for preparedness and caution in the face of potential disruptions caused by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay updated on the latest weather developments and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
